Trump says “No Going Back” as Greenland push puts NATO under pressure

US President Donald Trump has doubled down on one of his most controversial foreign policy positions, saying the United States must move forward with its push on Greenland and that “there can be no going back.”

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said Greenland is “essential for national and global security.” He added that American strength, supported by a rebuilt US military, is the only reliable way to maintain peace. Trump also said he spoke with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and confirmed that further discussions will take place at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

However, behind the strong statements, Trump’s Greenland push raises serious concerns for the future of NATO and transatlantic security. Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark, which is a NATO member. Any US move to take control of the island would put the alliance in an unprecedented situation where its most powerful member challenges the territory of another member.

NATO is built on Article 5, which states that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all. Denmark has indicated it would invoke Article 5 if Greenland’s sovereignty is threatened. What happens next in such a scenario remains highly uncertain and could shake the foundation of the alliance.

Ironically, analysts warn that this move could benefit America’s rivals. Russia, led by President Vladimir Putin, has long tried to weaken NATO and shift attention away from the war in Ukraine. Any internal conflict within the alliance would serve Moscow’s interests. While Trump argues that control of Greenland would counter Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic, experts say the most effective way to do that is by defeating Russia in Ukraine not by targeting Greenland.

There are also questions about whether such a move is even necessary. The United States already has significant access to Greenland under a 1951 defense agreement. At one point, the US operated 17 military bases on the island, many of which were later closed by Washington itself. These bases could be reopened if needed. Analysts also note that Arctic pressure from Russia and China is more concentrated around Alaska than Greenland.

Despite these concerns, the White House has not ruled out the use of force. At the same time, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has spoken about discussions with European officials regarding the possibility of purchasing Greenland. Both Denmark and Greenland’s capital Nuuk have firmly rejected the idea, warning that even discussing a sale could destabilize their governments.

The renewed push for Greenland appears to be influenced by powerful voices close to Trump. Tech investor Peter Thiel has spoken about creating “post-nation” settlements, Elon Musk has shown interest in Greenland’s rare earth resources, and billionaire Ronald Lauder is reportedly the first to have raised the idea with Trump. Together, these interests highlight how Greenland sits at the intersection of global power, economic opportunity, and geopolitics.
