Saudi Arabia Reclaims Top Spot as India’s Leading Oil Supplier
India’s energy landscape is shifting as Saudi Arabia is set to become the nation’s top oil supplier this month. This change comes as India faces increasing pressure from the United States to reduce its reliance on Russian crude.
Saudi Oil Imports Reach a 6 Year High
According to data from Kpler, India’s imports from Saudi Arabia are expected to reach between 1 million and 1.1 million barrels per day this February. This marks the highest volume since November 2019.
This surge significantly narrows the gap with Russia, which has dominated the Indian market since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. While Russia could still hold the top spot if its flows hit the upper end of projections (1.2 million barrels per day), the overall trend shows Russian shipments are on the decline.
The Impact of the India US Trade Deal
The shift follows a recent “historic” interim trade agreement between India and the U.S. Earlier this month, President Donald Trump claimed that India had agreed to stop buying Russian oil as part of the deal. While New Delhi has not officially confirmed a total ban, government remarks emphasize a strategy of “diversifying energy sources.”
As part of the trade off, the U.S. has:
- Lowered reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods from 25% to 18%.
- Removed the 25% punitive tariff previously imposed on India for its energy trade with Moscow.
Future Outlook: Russian Imports Expected to Shrink
Experts predict that imports from Russia will drop even further in the coming months, likely falling to between 800,000 and 1 million barrels per day in March.
A major factor in this decline is the upcoming maintenance shutdown at the Nayara Energy refinery. This facility is heavily dependent on Russian crude, and its closure in April and May will naturally reduce the amount of Russian oil entering the country.
Strategic Shifts in the Global Market
For Russia, losing market share in India means losing a vital customer for oil that is no longer welcome in Europe. For Saudi Arabia, regaining its position as India’s primary supplier restores its strategic influence in one of the world’s fastest-growing energy markets.
