Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to Represent India at Tarique Rahman’s Swearing-In
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will represent India at the swearing-in ceremony of Bangladesh’s new Prime Minister, Tarique Rahman, on February 17.
India’s Representation in Dhaka
The Ministry of External Affairs announced on Sunday that Om Birla will lead the Indian delegation for the event. While Bangladesh had invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the ceremony in Dhaka, he is unable to attend due to prior commitments, including a bilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and the AI Impact Summit in Delhi.
Tarique Rahman led the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to a major victory in the recent parliamentary elections. This transition marks the end of the interim government’s term and the return of an elected leadership.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
In an official statement, the ministry noted that the Speaker’s attendance highlights the “deep and enduring friendship” between the people of both countries. It also reaffirms India’s commitment to the democratic values that connect the two nations.
The statement further explained that India and Bangladesh share a long history, culture, and mutual respect. India welcomes the transition to an elected government under Rahman’s leadership, noting that his vision has received a clear mandate from the people of Bangladesh.
