India and Nepal Border to Close from March 2 for Nepal General Elections
The India-Nepal border will be closed from the midnight of March 2 until the midnight of March 5. This closure is in preparation for Nepal’s general elections, which are scheduled for March 5, 2026.
Sudhir Sharma, the head of the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Rupaidiha, Bahraich, confirmed that Nepal’s Ministry of Home Affairs issued an official notice regarding the shutdown on February 26.
Election Security and Border Restrictions
According to the official communication, all border outposts along the Bank district which connects to India will be closed starting the night of March 2. This measure is designed to ensure that the election process remains free, fair, and secure.
During this period, the regular import and export of goods through the ICP will be suspended. However, officials clarified that the movement of essential medicines and other critical supplies will not be stopped.
Increased Vigilance and Travel Advice
Ganga Singh Udawat, Commandant of the 42nd Battalion of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), stated that “restricted movement” will be strictly enforced until the night of the election.
Security forces have already increased monitoring at the border. Currently, travelers are only allowed to cross after a thorough identity check and verification. Authorities advise citizens of both India and Nepal to avoid crossing the border during this time unless it is absolutely necessary.
Exceptions for Voters and Emergencies
Many Nepali voters live and work in India. These individuals, along with patients in serious condition and vehicles carrying essential goods, may be permitted to cross the border under the close supervision of security personnel.
