Indian Embassy in Mexico Issues Safety Advisory After High-Profile Security Operation
The Indian Embassy in Mexico has issued an urgent security advisory for Indian nationals living in several regions affected by violence. This follows a major military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, where security forces killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho.” He was the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
Official reports state that El Mencho was wounded during the raid and died while being moved to Mexico City. His death is considered one of the most significant moments in Mexico’s recent efforts to combat organized crime.
Violence and Retaliation in Multiple States
The operation has sparked violent reactions from cartel members across several states. Reports describe cartel members setting vehicles on fire, blocking major highways, and causing panic in cities.
In Guadalajara, streets were empty as residents stayed indoors for safety. Many schools in the affected areas have suspended classes due to security risks.
Guidance for Indian Nationals
Because of the recent violence, the Indian Embassy has urged Indian citizens in the following areas to stay indoors until further notice:
- Jalisco: Including Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, and Chapala.
- Tamaulipas: Including Reynosa and nearby areas.
- Specific parts of: Michoacán, Guerrero, and Nuevo León.
The Embassy advises all citizens to stay away from areas with heavy police or military activity. People should remain alert, be aware of their surroundings, and avoid any unnecessary travel.
Safety Tips and Emergency Contact Information
In an advisory shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Embassy recommended that citizens:
- Monitor local news for regular updates.
- Follow all instructions from local Mexican authorities.
- Avoid large crowds and public gatherings.
- Keep family and friends updated on their safety and location.
Emergency Contacts:
- For immediate emergencies in Mexico, dial 911.
- For assistance from the Indian Embassy, call +52 55 4847 7539.
International Reaction and Ongoing Monitoring
While authorities continue to monitor the situation, U.S. President Donald Trump posted a message on Truth Social, stating, “We’re winning too much, it’s just not fair!” This comes as many view the removal of the cartel leader as a major milestone for regional security.
Security operations remain active across the affected states as officials work to restore order.
