India Commits to Stopping Russian Oil Purchases, Says US Secretary Rubio
During a trade deal announcement in early February, US President Donald Trump stated that India has agreed to stop buying crude oil from Russia. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently confirmed this, noting that India has committed to ending these oil imports.
US Claims and the Munich Security Conference
Since the trade deal was announced, US officials have repeatedly stated that India will move away from Russian oil. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, Secretary Rubio addressed questions regarding the Russia-Ukraine war and the sanctions placed on Moscow.
“In our conversations with India, we have received their commitment to stop buying additional Russian oil,” Rubio said.
Trade Deals and Tariff Changes
Following the announcement of this agreement, President Trump issued an executive order to roll back a 25% tariff on India. These tariffs had been imposed last August specifically because of India’s decision to purchase Russian crude oil.
India’s Strategy for Energy Security
Despite these statements from US officials, India has previously emphasized a strategy of diversification. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri noted earlier this week that India plans to maintain multiple sources for crude oil to ensure a stable supply chain. He clarified that India’s “national interests” will remain the primary factor in deciding where the country buys its energy.
