Delhi-Mumbai Expressway Update: New Deadlines Announced
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari recently shared updated timelines for the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. Speaking in the Lok Sabha on February 12, 2026, he noted that most of the corridor is expected to be operational by June 2026, though some sections in Gujarat face further delays.
Revised Completion Timeline
According to the Minister, the expressway has been divided into 52 packages to manage construction. The updated schedule for the main sections is as follows:
- Delhi to Vadodara: This stretch is expected to be finished by May 2026.
- Vadodara to Mumbai: Most of this section is slated for completion by June 2026.
- Gujarat Bottlenecks: Three specific project packages in Gujarat have been delayed and are now targeted for completion in the 2027-28 financial year.
The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will eventually span 1,386 km. Currently, about 875 km of the highway is already open to traffic, up from 774 km in mid-2025.
Reasons for the Delay
Gadkari explained that several factors have slowed progress, including:
- Challenges in acquiring land.
- Waiting for permissions to cut trees.
- Moving existing utilities (like power lines).
- Issues with specific contractors (concessionaire defaults).
Despite these setbacks, the Minister assured that the project remains within its approved budget. He noted that while some sections near Surat slowed down last year, most have regained momentum except for a 90 km stretch that remains a focus for the team.
Progress on the Mumbai-Goa Highway (NH-66)
The Minister also provided an update on the 485 km Mumbai-Goa highway.
- Current Status: Construction is finished on 465 km of the road.
- Remaining Work: The final 20 km is still under construction.
- Deadline: The remaining work is expected to be completed in phases by June 2026.
Faster Travel and Economic Growth
Once the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is fully operational, travel time between the two cities will drop from 33 hours to roughly 12 hours. This massive project will connect major economic hubs across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
To ensure the remaining work stays on track, the government is holding regular review meetings with all partners to maintain quality and speed up delivery.
