Beware of the 8th Pay Commission Salary Calculator Scam
Central government employees are being warned about a new digital scam targeting those waiting for salary updates under the 8th Pay Commission.
As employees and pensioners wait for news on potential hikes, fraudsters are using fake salary calculation apps to trick people. These “calculators” are actually dangerous software designed to steal bank details and personal information.
How the Salary Calculator Scam Works
Cyber authorities have noticed a sharp increase in suspicious messages on apps like WhatsApp. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), which works under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has issued an urgent advisory.
Scammers send messages claiming you can calculate your new salary under the 8th Pay Commission by downloading a specific file (an APK file). Once you install this file on your Android phone, the scammers gain full access to your device.
Unlike official apps from the Google Play Store, these manual APK files bypass security safeguards. Once installed, the malware allows criminals to:
- Control your phone remotely.
- Read your private messages.
- Steal OTPs (verification codes).
- Transfer money from your bank account in the background.
How to Stay Safe: The “Dos”
To protect yourself and your finances from this fraud, follow these essential safety steps:
- Be suspicious of APK files: Treat any app file sent via WhatsApp or SMS as a threat. Government agencies do not send apps through text messages.
- Use official websites: Only get information about pay revisions or pensions from official government portals.
- Check credible news: Verify any updates regarding the 8th Pay Commission through well known and trusted news outlets.
- Verify the sender: If a message claims to be from a bank or authority, contact them directly using an official phone number to check if it is real.
- Watch for red flags: Avoid links in messages that use poor grammar or try to pressure you with “urgent” deadlines.
What to Avoid: The “Don’ts”
To reduce your risk of being hacked, keep these rules in mind:
- Do not download unknown files: Never install an APK file from an unsolicited message, as it likely contains malware.
- Do not click random links: Avoid clicking links sent by unfamiliar numbers or unverified business accounts.
- Never share sensitive data: Do not give out your OTP, UPI PIN, banking passwords, or CVV number. Real government offices and banks will never ask for this information.
