India Chip: A Major Step Toward India’s Semiconductor Future

India Chip Pvt. Ltd. is a 60:40 joint venture between HCL Group and Foxconn. This project marks an important move toward making India self-reliant in semiconductor manufacturing.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that a developed India can only be built on self-reliance. For this, making chips in India is essential. He explained that during the Covid-19 pandemic, the weak global supply chain for small semiconductor chips slowed down many economies and stopped production in several factories.

Speaking virtually at the foundation stone ceremony of India Chip Pvt. Ltd., Modi said that the technology India builds today will shape the country’s strength in the 21st century. He emphasized that “Made in India” chips are key to India’s future growth.

India Chip Facility in Jewar, Greater Noida

The new Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility will be set up in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) area in Jewar, Greater Noida.

India Chip Pvt. Ltd., formed by HCL Group and Foxconn, plans to make the advanced OSAT facility operational by 2028. The company will invest Rs 3,700 crore over the next few years. The plant will manufacture display driver chips, which are essential components in digital screens.

Investment, Jobs, and Supply Chain Growth

The project is expected to create over 3,500 direct and indirect jobs. It will also help build strong local supply chains and attract partners from across the semiconductor industry.

The facility is designed to process 20,000 wafers per month. This capacity will help meet India’s growing demand for semiconductor components. At the same time, it will strengthen a reliable and self-reliant semiconductor supply chain in the country.

Leaders Highlight India’s Growing Electronics Strength

Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that over the past 11 years, India has become a major hub for electronics manufacturing. He noted that India now ranks third among electronics-exporting countries. Once operational, the Jewar plant is expected to produce 3.6 crore chips per month. He added that the “brain” behind many digital screens will soon be made in India.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that Jewar is becoming a key growth center not only for the state but for the entire country. He added that Uttar Pradesh’s development will benefit from the Prime Minister’s vision for semiconductor manufacturing.

Industry Leaders Express Confidence

Bob Chen, President of Foxconn’s Semiconductor Business Group, said the company aims to build a reliable semiconductor assembly and testing facility in India. He expressed confidence in growing together and contributing to India’s position in the global technology landscape.

HCL Group Chairperson Roshini Nadar said the joint venture facility will serve both domestic and international markets, supporting India’s expanding role in the global semiconductor industry.
