OpenAI Technology Used in US Military Drone Swarm Trials
OpenAI has partnered with defense companies selected by the Pentagon to develop voice-controlled software for “drone swarms.” According to sources familiar with the project, this technology is designed to help the US military manage groups of drones using simple voice commands.
How OpenAI’s Technology Will Be Used
Open AI’s role is specifically focused on translation. The software will take voice commands from battlefield commanders and turn them into digital instructions that drones can understand.
Sources emphasized that the AI will not be used for:
- Operating the drone swarms directly.
- Integrating weapons systems.
- Making decisions about targets.
The $100 Million Pentagon Challenge
This project is part of a $100 million prize challenge launched by the Pentagon in January. The goal is to create prototypes for drone swarms that can execute missions and make certain decisions without constant human input.
The competition will last six months and move through several phases. OpenAI’s logo has appeared on at least two successful submissions, though the company did not bid for the prize itself. Instead, its partners chose to use an open-source version of OpenAI’s model for their proposals.
Key Partners and Roles
One of the winning teams is led by Applied Intuition Inc., a defense contractor and strategic partner of OpenAI. Other companies involved include:
- Sierra Nevada Corporation: Handling system integration.
- Noda AI: Providing the “orchestration” software that controls the drones.
- OpenAI: Acting as the “Command-and-Control” interface between the human operator and the machine.
Shifting Policies on Military Work
OpenAI’s involvement in this trial shows an expansion of its work with the military. Recently, the Pentagon announced a separate deal to bring ChatGPT to 3 million Department of Defense personnel.
In the past, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed caution about AI making weapons decisions. While he stated he didn’t expect the company to develop weapons platforms in the “foreseeable future,” he noted that the company’s stance could change as the world evolves. In 2024, OpenAI updated its policies to allow more work in national security.
Risks and Ethical Concerns
The idea of using AI in combat remains controversial. While the Pentagon wants to use these systems to make the military more effective, some officials and researchers have raised alarms.
Key concerns include:
- Hallucinations: AI models can sometimes generate false or unreliable information.
- Lack of Human Oversight: Critics worry about “taking the human out of the loop” if AI translates voice commands directly into military actions.
- Bias: Large language models can carry built-in biases that might affect battlefield decisions.
What’s Next for the Drone Trials?
The Pentagon’s competition will progress in stages. The first phase focuses strictly on software development. If successful, later stages will involve testing the software on live drones in the air and at sea. Eventually, the project aims to develop technology that can manage a drone mission from “launch to termination.”
