Asha Sharma Named New CEO of Microsoft Gaming
Microsoft has appointed Asha Sharma as the new CEO of its gaming division. This marks one of the most significant leadership changes in the history of Xbox. Sharma succeeds Phil Spencer, who is retiring after nearly 40 years with the company.
According to Sharma, her leadership will focus on three main goals: delivering great games, ensuring the return of Xbox, and shaping the future of play.
Leadership Transition
Microsoft announced the news in a blog post on February 20. To ensure a smooth transition, Spencer will stay on as an advisor through the summer.
Spencer shared his thoughts on the move in a post on X:
“It’s rare in life to know when a chapter is closing, but after 38 years at Microsoft, that moment has arrived for me. I’ve made the decision to retire and begin the next chapter of my life. It’s a milestone that’s given me a chance to reflect on the incredible journey I’ve been fortunate enough to share with so many of you.”
A New Chapter for Xbox
Spencer also expressed his full support for his successor. He noted that Sharma is joining a talented team dedicated to serving players.
“I’m excited for Asha Sharma as she steps into the CEO role,” Spencer wrote. He added that her curiosity and desire to strengthen the company’s foundation give him confidence that Xbox communities will be well supported in the future.
