India Set to Approve Critical Minerals Pacts with Germany and Canada

The Union Cabinet is expected to approve two major international agreements on Tuesday to strengthen India’s access to critical minerals. Sources suggest the Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will likely greenlight a “Joint Declaration of Intent” for cooperation in the minerals sector with both Germany and Canada.

These decisions come as countries worldwide race to secure resources essential for clean energy and advanced technology.

Strengthening Ties with Germany

The partnership with Germany is expected to focus on several key areas:

  • Joint Exploration: Working together to find new mineral deposits.
  • Sustainable Mining: Using environmentally friendly mining practices.
  • Supply Chain Resilience: Ensuring a steady and reliable flow of materials.
  • Technology Transfer: Sharing technical knowledge and expertise.

Boosting Energy Security

This move is part of India’s broader effort to secure vital minerals like lithium, cobalt, nickel, and rare earth elements. By forming international alliances, India aims to support its “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India) goals and ensure long term energy security.

Partnership with Canada

The Cabinet is also expected to clear a similar agreement with Canada. This pact will likely follow the same path of cooperation, helping India build a stronger network for sourcing critical materials.

Aligning with National Goals

These agreements support the “Critical Minerals Mission” launched by the government last year. They also complement recent efforts to auction mineral blocks under the updated Mines and Minerals Act. By securing these partnerships, India continues to position itself as a key player in the global shift toward green energy and high-tech manufacturing.
