Elon Musk slams X algorithm after Open-Sourcing it, calls it “Dumb”

Social media platform X has made the source code for its recommendation algorithm public. This is the system that decides which posts appear in users’ feeds. Elon Musk confirmed the move in a post on X, saying the current algorithm has “notable flaws” and calling it “dumb.”

He explained that the goal is to be more transparent, letting people see how the algorithm works and improves over time.

Musk said, “We know the algorithm is dumb and needs big improvements, but at least you can watch us work on it in real time. No other social media company does this.”

We know the algorithm is dumb and needs massive improvements, but at least you can see us struggle to make it better in real-time and with transparency.

No other social media companies do this. https://t.co/UMvBlD1ZpV

X has made its recommendation system public, showing how posts and ads appear on the platform. The system is based on the same transformer-based AI used in Grok, the model developed by Elon Musk’s company xAI. The source code is now on GitHub, allowing developers, researchers, and users to study how the platform ranks content.

The release gives a clear view of how both regular posts and ads are ranked. Users can now see how feed placement works, how posts beyond followed accounts are discovered, and how engagement signals affect ranking.

X says this will help developers understand how different signals interact and spot potential flaws or biases.

Since taking over X (formerly Twitter) in 2022, Musk has criticized other social media platforms for hiding their algorithms. He wants users to see how content is chosen and prioritized.

Publishing the code is part of making transparency a key feature of X, not just something explained in policies or blog posts. Unlike the partial code shared in 2023, this release shows the live system currently running on the platform, fulfilling Musk’s earlier promise to open-source X’s recommendation engine.
