Hyderabad Metro to Launch Pod Taxis for Improved Last-Mile Connectivity
The Telangana government is preparing to introduce an innovative transport system pod taxis to solve last-mile connectivity challenges for Hyderabad Metro commuters. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between metro stations and major destinations like IT hubs, office complexes, and residential zones.
According to recent reports, this project will help passengers travel easily to locations where public transport options are currently limited.
Why is Hyderabad Planning a Pod Taxi System?
Every day, approximately five lakh people use the Hyderabad Metro. However, many face a “last mile” problem once they exit the station. A shortage of buses and autos, high fares, and heavy traffic congestion often make the final leg of the journey difficult.
To address these issues, the government is introducing pod taxis, officially known as Personal Rapid Transit (PRT). These will act as a dedicated feeder system for the metro network.
How Will Pod Taxis Work?
Pod taxis will operate on elevated tracks, completely separate from road traffic. This design ensures that commuters can avoid delays caused by ground-level congestion.
Key features of the system include:
- Automated and Driverless: The vehicles will be fully controlled by computers.
- Capacity: Each pod can carry six to eight passengers.
- Speed: They will travel at speeds ranging from 40 km/h to 60 km/h.
- Efficiency: The system is expected to handle nearly 10,000 passengers per hour.
- Eco-Friendly: The pods run on electricity or batteries, making them a non-polluting transport option.
Which Areas Will Be Covered?
The project will be rolled out in phases. The first phase will focus on high demand corridors where commuter movement is heaviest. Proposed routes include:
- Rayadurgam to Kukatpally
- Rayadurgam to Hitech City
- The Financial District
- Knowledge City
- Areas surrounding the State Secretariat
Project Implementation
The project will be developed under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. Specifically, it will follow the “Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer” (DBFOT) framework.
Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) has already invited consultants to conduct technical and financial feasibility studies. With similar projects being planned in Mumbai, Hyderabad is poised to become a leader in modern urban mobility.
