Indian Markets Ready for Recovery as Earnings Cycle Bottoms Out

Despite recent market volatility and selling by foreign investors, India’s stock market is positioned for a strong comeback. According to Siddharth Vora, Head of Quant Investment Strategies at PL Asset Management, a recovery in corporate earnings and steady domestic investment are the primary drivers for this growth.

Why the Outlook for India Remains Strong

Vora acknowledged that high oil prices, global tensions, and US interest rate concerns have hurt short-term investor sentiment. However, he emphasized that India’s long term growth story is still on track.

Vora identified several key factors that will boost demand over the medium to long term:

  • Potential tax cuts
  • Improvements to the GST structure
  • Future interest rate cuts by the RBI

He noted that India’s stable economy gives it a “very positive bias” compared to other emerging markets.

The Earnings Cycle Is Turning Around

A major shift is happening in corporate profits. After six quarters of weak results, Vora believes the worst is over. “The reasons for earnings to recover are already in place,” he stated, noting that the earnings cycle has finally hit its lowest point and is ready to rise.

Best Investment Sectors: PSU Banks vs. IT

When looking at where to invest, Vora favors “value” stocks. He is particularly optimistic about Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) banks.

Vora prefers PSU banks over private banks because they offer:

  • Better growth potential
  • More attractive valuations
  • Higher overall value for investors

In contrast, he remains cautious about the technology sector and currently holds fewer IT stocks in his portfolio.

The Role of Market Liquidity

Domestic investors have helped keep the market steady even as foreign capital left. Vora predicts a major rally once foreign investors return to the Indian market. When local and foreign money flow in at the same time, India is expected to outperform other global markets significantly.
