At the India AI Summit 2026, Sundar Pichai presented Google’s most ambitious strategy for India yet. The center of this plan is a massive ₹1.24 lakh crore ($15 billion) AI hub in Visakhapatnam (Vizag). This marks Google’s largest investment in artificial intelligence outside the United States.
The Vizag hub will feature gigawatt-scale computing power, data centers run on clean energy, and a major subsea cable gateway. These features will turn Vizag into a global hotspot for AI connectivity and computing. Indian leaders have called the project a “landmark development” that supports the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision and strengthens India’s role in the global AI landscape.
India: A Leading AI User Base
Pichai noted that India’s digital transformation is moving at an “extraordinary pace,” making the country a key part of Google’s roadmap. He highlighted that Indian users are among the world’s most frequent adopters of voice-driven AI, which is changing how Search works. The Gemini app, now available in 10 Indian languages, is also one of Google’s fastest-growing global markets.
New Partnerships for Government and Education
To make AI more accessible across the country, Pichai announced several new collaborations:
- Google DeepMind & Government of India: Working together to expand AI availability nationwide.
- Wadhwani AI: Focused on scaling AI education and training.
- Karmayogi Bharat: A new partnership to bring AI tools to public-sector training.
- Atal Tinkering Labs: Introducing generative AI tools to young innovators in schools.
Strengthening Global Tech Ties
Pichai also introduced the America-India Connect initiative. This subsea cable project will create secure, high-speed data paths connecting India to Singapore, South Africa, and Australia. This initiative is vital for future research and computing collaboration between nations.
India’s Place in the AI Future
With the huge investment in Vizag and a highly active user base, Pichai’s message was clear: India is no longer just catching up—it is actively leading and shaping the future of global AI.
