January GST Revenue Rises 6.2% Year-on-Year to Rs 1.93 Lakh Crore
India’s Gross GST Revenue in January Increased 6.2% to Rs 1.93 Lakh Crore. Gross GST collections rose by 6.2% to over Rs 1.93 lakh crore in January, mainly due to higher revenue from imports, sources said on Sunday.
Total refunds fell by 3.1% to Rs 22,665 crore during the month.
Net Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue grew faster, rising 7.6% to around Rs 1.71 lakh crore in January.
Cess collection from tobacco products stood at Rs 5,768 crore in January. This is much lower than the Rs 13,009 crore collected in January last year, when the cess was applied to luxury, sin, and demerit goods such as cars and tobacco products.
Effective September 22, 2025, GST rates on about 375 items were reduced, making many goods cheaper. In addition, the compensation cess is now applied only to tobacco and related products, instead of luxury, sin, and demerit goods as before. These changes in GST rates have affected overall revenue collections.
Gross tax collections from domestic transactions rose 4.8% to Rs 1.41 lakh crore, while revenue from imports increased by 10.1% to Rs 52,253 crore in January.
