Rani Kapur Moves Delhi High Court Over Estate and Family Legacy Dispute
Rani Kapur, the widow of late industrialist Dr Surinder Kapur and mother of the late Sunjay Kapur, has approached the Delhi High Court with a fresh legal suit alleging fraud and illegal control of family assets.
According to a report by news agency ANI, Rani Kapur has accused her daughter-in-law Priya Kapur, along with other family members, of creating a fraudulent trust to unlawfully take over her entire estate, family legacy, and controlling stakes in key Sona Group companies.
Inheritance Dispute Intensifies
The case adds to an ongoing year-long inheritance dispute linked to Sunjay Kapur’s estate. The legal battle also involves Sunjay’s earlier family, including the children from his previous marriage to actor Karisma Kapoor, who recently accused Priya Kapur of hiding assets.
Last month, Rani Kapur told the Delhi High Court that instead of mourning her son’s death, Priya Kapur took swift steps to gain control over his assets. She claimed that she was never informed about her son’s will, which reportedly does not mention her, despite Sunjay Kapur stating during his lifetime that he inherited everything from his mother.
Questions Raised Over the Will
Rani Kapur’s lawyer argued that it was unlikely that Sunjay Kapur would leave his entire personal estate to Priya Kapur alone. The lawyer told the court that if Sunjay intended to exclude his mother, he would have clearly mentioned it in the will.
The submissions were made before Justice Jyoti Singh during a hearing related to a separate petition filed by Karisma Kapoor’s children. They have challenged the validity of Sunjay Kapur’s will, which reportedly involves assets worth around ₹30,000 crore.
The plea stated that Sunjay Kapur shared a close and equal bond with his children, his mother, and other members of the Kapur family, making it improbable that he would name a single beneficiary.
Allegations of Asset Concealment
Rani Kapur’s legal team further alleged that Priya Kapur concealed significant assets belonging to the deceased while submitting asset details to the court. These allegedly include paintings, bank balances, mutual funds, life insurance policies, rental income, and luxury watches.
Sunjay Kapur’s Death
Sunjay Kapur passed away on June 12 after collapsing during a polo match in England. Reports said he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest.
The Delhi High Court is currently hearing multiple petitions related to the estate, making this one of the most high-profile family inheritance disputes in recent times.
